Web Development on Windows 7 - Essential Applications

As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve been asked for specific information on how I work. Having a solid work environment can go a long way in increasing your efficiency and help you stay organized, so today we’ll take a look at the setup of my desktop computer.

The majority of my web design and development work is done on a 64-bit Windows 7 desktop. For more serious programming projects (pretty much any language other than PHP, HTML or CSS), I do switch over to Ubuntu in VMware Workstation, but nearly all of my web design client work is done in Windows. From my experience so far, Windows 7 has been absolutely stellar for web development – it’s easy to use, fast and just plain works.

Using the Right Software

The key to working in any OS is using the right tools to make your work process as painless and efficient as possible. Thankfully for Windows users, there are plenty of great tools available for web design and development.

Notepad++

This is probably the best text editor available on Windows and best of all, it’s completely open source. Notepad++ supports custom styles, recognizes a multitude of different programming languages and supports third-party plugins. For my setup, I use a slightly modified Ruby Blue style/theme and the following plugins:

• Explorer – Adds a file browser in a pane to the left or right of your editing screen, giving you quick access to your project files

• Zen-Coding (Python-based) – If you don’t know what Zen Coding is, just watch the video. It will change the way you write web pages!

I’ve also used it to prep for a presentation while on a plane; i is much easier to whip out my Blackberry than my laptop.

Travel

TripIt (iPhone, Blackberry, Android | free/premium option)

I have been using the TripIt Web site for a couple of years; it is a great way to share your travel plans with friends. TripIt’s mobile app is a nice complement to the Web site and allows you to perform most of the main functions while on the go.

My favorite feature of TripIt is the ability to see which of my friends or colleagues are traveling to the same city as I am at the same time. I also like the ability to retrieve all of my travel information such as flight times or hotel reservations from the TripIt app rather than sifting through my inbox for the various confirmation e-mails I received from the airline or hotel.

Top 10 Android Web Development Apps

As an avid Android device user with both an Android tablet and phone, of course I am always looking for apps that would be of use to web developers. After a bit of searching I was able to find apps for just about every aspect of web development, from the web server itself to an FTP client to move the files, to a source code viewer that let's you view the source code on any web page, analytics tools to allow you to analyze your website, to custom apps for the major CMSes WordPress, Drupal and Joomla!.

Using the Android web development apps I found, I was able to create a web page from scratch, test it on a web server that is running on my Android device from anywhere on my local network, move the file over to my external web host using an FTP app so it's live on the web, SSH to my external web server to work with the file live, and the page was ready for the masses, able to be viewed by anyone with an internet connection. My inner geek was smiling!

Since I have several sites which run on the Joomla! and Drupal CMSes, I can now potentially create content and publish that content directly from my Android device using the Joomla and Drupal Android apps.

While the likelyhood that I would need to be able to create content or handle a "web emergency" while I was out on the go is not likely for me personally, I could easily see a blogger writing their latest work while actually on the scene of an event, and then using one of the tools we will discuss here, they would be able to instantly publish the blog to their website, complete with images. Yes, you could actually update your website while you're sitting on the beach enjoying the breeze, or more likely, while you are on the scene of some major event, be it a trade conference or accident scene.

That’s the sort of choice Microsoft is asking you to make with the spectacularly designed, wildly controversial Surface tablet.

Now, for the very first tablet it has ever manufactured (in fact, its very first computer), Microsoft could have just made another iPad ripoff. But it aimed much higher. It wanted to build a tablet that’s just as good at creating work as it is at organizing it.

On the hardware front, Microsoft has succeeded brilliantly. Read the specs and try not to drool on your keyboard.

The Surface shares some measurements with the full-size iPad (1.5 pounds, 0.4 inches thick). But at 10.8 by 6.7 inches, it’s a wider, thinner rectangle, a better fit for movie playback. It has stereo speakers instead of mono. Both front and back video cameras are 720p high definition.

It has ports and jacks that iPad owners can only dream about: a memory-card slot to expand the storage, a video output jack and a USB 2.0 jack. You can connect almost any USB device: keyboard, mouse, flash drive, speakers, hard drive and so on.

Each Surface model has double the storage of the same-price iPad. For example, the $500 Surface offers 32 gigabytes; the 64-gig Surface is $600.

iPad Mini: Apple Launches Smaller Tablet

Apple unveils mini iPad tablet with prices starting at $329 (£269 in the UK) to compete with Amazon and Google's tablets

Apple made its play to dominate the fast-growing tablet market on Tuesday by unveiling an "iPad mini" - a new tablet half the size of its existing iPad - to compete with Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire.

But the price may prove a barrier for potential buyers considering it against its rivals: the iPad mini will start at $329 (£269 in the UK), against $159 for the cheapest Kindle Fire and $249 for the Nexus 7.

Even so, Apple chief executive Tim Cook pointed to the momentum that Apple has built up in the tablet market, saying that two weeks ago the company had sold its 100 millionth iPad - "unprecedented for a new product in this category," he said. The first iPad went on sale in April 2010.

"Others have tried to make tablets smaller than the iPad and they have failed miserably," said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, who introduced the iPad mini in San Jose, USA.

The new iPad mini, which can be held in one hand, has a 7.9 inch (20cm) display, weighs in at 0.68 pounds (0.3kg) and is 7.2mm (0.3 inches) thick, a quarter thinner than the new fourth generation iPad which was launched at the same event.

Apple has had about 70% of the entire tablet market up to now, but the launch in the summer of Google's 7in Nexus 7 tablet - estimated to have sold around a million in three months - and of the Kindle Fire, launched in the US in October 2011, has pointed to huge potential in the market.

While PC sales have been stuttering and even shrinking by double-digit amounts in the US, those of tablets have rocketed since Apple introduced the iPad, followed by a number of rivals using Google's Android mobile software.
