Apple CEO Tim Cook apologizes for iOS 6 Maps

In an open letter to his customers Apple CEO Tim Cook today apologized for iOS 6 Maps’ poor performance, saying the app falls short of the company’s commitment to deliver the best experience possible to its customers.

Cook recommends that, until the Maps app is improved, users try alternative map apps available on the Apple App Store like Microsoft’s Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by creating shortcuts to their websites on an iOS 6 device’s home screen.

As we’ve reported earlier this week, alternative transit apps like HopStop, Embark and Transporter have already seen a significant boost in downloads since iOS 6 was released, and it’s safe to assume Cook’s letter will have a similar affect on the navigation apps he recommended.

Apple’s newly released iOS 6 on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch doesn’t include transit directions in its new Maps app, a feature many city folks relied upon until now. In addition, the features that are in the app have served up misplaced businesses, city name misspellings and distorted 3D images to the users. A Tumblr was created to visually show some of the issues users have been experiencing from the Maps app. Apple told the BBC on Sept. 21 that the Maps app will “improve.”

Cook’s letter is included here in full:

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up. Read more

Best Android Apps

The best Android apps are getting harder to find in the increasingly crowded Android Market. We're here to help as we test and rank the top applications available for Android phones.

When T-Mobile launched the very first Android-powered handset – the G1 – back in 2008, the app library to go along with it looked like a minimart beside Apple’s Walmart. But the past few years have been kind to Google. The steady release of high-profile, high-power Android handsets have turned that initial drizzle of apps into a torrent. Though it used to be called the Android Market, the Google Play store offers applications for just about everything. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up what we think are the best Android apps in several different categories. We’ll continue to update this list periodically.

Make sure to check out Best Android games and our picks for The Best Android phones.

Apple iPhone 5 scores stunning success, selling faster than any other handset

Apple Inc fans queued around city blocks worldwide on Friday to get their hands on the new iPhone 5, pointing to a strong holiday season for the consumer device maker despite grumblings about the mapping app in the new smartphone.

The iPhone 5 — thinner, lighter and with a 4-inch screen — went on sale in stores across Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia, with mobile carriers reporting record demand that looked likely to stretch Apple’s supply capacity.

“The line for the iPhone 5 was 70 per cent greater than the line for the iPhone 4S despite Apple taking two (times) as many online pre-orders,” said Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. He expects Apple to sell 8 million of the new smartphones over the weekend.

The long lines of excited buyers prompted optimism on Wall Street. Deutsche Bank raised its target on Apple stock to $850 from $775, saying “demand indicators are tracking very strongly.”

The iPhone is Apple’s highest-margin product and accounts for half of the company’s annual revenue. Apple shares were up 0.5 per cent to $702 in afternoon trading in New York.

JPMorgan estimates the phone could provide a $3.2 billion boost to the U.S. economy in the fourth quarter — a boost almost equal to the whole economy of Fiji.

Apple’s rival and component supplier, Samsung Electronics Co, tried to spoil the party, saying it plans to add the iPhone 5 to its existing patent lawsuits against Apple. Read more...

iPhone 5 Release - Apple iPhone 5 Creates Excitement Nationwide

iPhone 5
People all over the United States waited in line throughout the night for the release of the iPhone 5. In Augusta, people began lining up around midnight for stores that opened at 8 a.m.

"It's like Christmas," said Jovonda Mcneil.

"I got here at midnight last night," added Joshua Suarez, who was the first one in line at the Verizon Wireless store on Robert C. Daniel Parkway.

Many devoted iPhone fans lined the sidewalks in anticipation.

"I've had every iPhone that's came out, so I'm ready for the iPhone 5," said Brandon Phipps.

The stores are ready, too.

"We're expecting a lot of customers, a lot of lines, a lot of people coming in," said District Manager Stephan Swafford. "We've had a lot of people pre-order, so that's been very good as well."

In fact, over 2 million people across the country pre-ordered the iPhone 5 in just 24 hours.

"We expect it to be a very hot phone, a very exciting phone," Swafford said.

All that excitement comes from the upgraded design and features.

"I like the fact that it has a larger screen and 4G technology," Suarez said.

"The 4G technology, the bigger screen, you'll be able to Facetime over 3G instead of just using Wi-Fi," Phipps said.

One of the newest features with the updated software is a new mapping program. Instead of using Google Maps, it now has a 3D Apple Maps system that's getting a little bit of mixed reaction.

"I like it," said Gerrad Mitchell. "I wasn't a big fan of Google Maps. I haven't really used this to go anywhere yet, but just the mechanics of it seems a little bit smoother."

But not everyone agrees.

"It's like they're still trying to catch up a little bit," Mcneil said…

Mobile Enterprise - Mobile Will Be Huge

This year, we’ve talked about the mobile enterprise (it is the name of the column, after all). And though we’ve talked a lot about the importance of mobile compatibility from a business perspective, we haven’t talked much about how to go about making mobile websites compatible with mobile devices.

The Right Mobile Application to Develop

This week, W3C announced a new standard that will make it easier for developers and content providers to create dynamic mobile Web applications. The Mobile Web Application Best Practices, published as a W3C Recommendation, aims to provide practical advice from many mobile Web stakeholders for the easy development and deployment of mobile Web applications that work across many platforms.

The list of best practices was compiled by the Mobile Web Best Practices (MWBP) Working Group, which was made up of key leaders from the mobile industry, and offers guidance on which Web technologies are particularly relevant on mobile devices.

I won’t attempt to replicate the article, as I won’t do it justice, but I will summarize a few of the key points that it brings up.

1. The mobile web is moving forward. Right now it’s all aboard or sees you later. If you haven’t thought carefully about your mobile development strategy, you need to assemble a team of crackerjack designers and developers to help get you up to speed, or risk losing a large proportion of users. Choosing the right framework requires some understanding of your audience and the web experience you want them to be a part of.

2. It would be way easier if you could just design for the iPhone. But you can’t. With the Android gaining popularity and Blackberry catching up, companies must prepare to meet the standards of more than just one mobile device. That doesn’t mean that you have to take on all of them, but it doesn’t mean you can ignore them altogether.

Cake Mail says “mobile will be a huge market in the future, especially as devices and frameworks become more and more advanced.” We agree and we look forward to the future of the mobile web.
